Brits' love affair with credit continues

13 November 2007

It seems that Britons are becoming more attached to their plastic than ever, as a new survey has found that one in ten credit card holders use their flexible friend on a daily basis, with the rise of internet shopping fuelling this growth.

Research by Abbey reveals that three million people use their credit card everyday, with online shopping leading the way in terms of purchases.

An impressive 61 per cent of people said they used their plastic to pay for internet purchases, while the high street came in just behind with 55 per cent of cardholders regularly using their card for a bit of retail therapy.

Meanwhile, 54 per cent of Britons admit to paying for goods with a credit card at least once a week.

"There is no one way that people use their credit card and we see as many different spending patterns as there are people," Roger Lovering, managing director of Abbey credit cards, explained.

On the other end of the scale 35 per cent of credit card holders use their card just once per month, with an encouraging 57 per cent of card holders paying off the balance on their credit cards every month.
