Shop around for car insurance as premiums rise...

11 September 2007

One in five motorists obtained just one quote the last time they bought a car insurance policy, new research has revealed.

According to a study carried out by Sainsbury's Bank, many drivers are too lazy to shop around for a better deal, with over one in ten people admitting they could not be bothered or did not have enough time to do their car insurance homework.

Premiums have also been rising steadily over the past year, the supermarket's research showed.

The average premium was around £486.43 in July 2007, representing an increase of 2.9 per cent on December 2006 and 4.2 per cent on July 2006.

What is more, over a 12-month period, the average car insurance premium increased by £19.80, the firm found.

Lucy Hunter, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, said: "Premiums have been rising steadily and it has been predicted that this year, they could increase by as much as ten per cent.

"However, by shopping around, you can still reduce your premiums significantly."

The average premium for male drivers was £518.46 compared to £442.28 for women.
