Online banking in focus

Using online banking is completely safe through a home wireless network, so long as users ensure that the relevant safety procedures are in place, an online self-help service has claimed.
According to BroadbandChoices.co.uk, users should utilise the most up-to-date wireless security available, however simple security programmes and steps such as changing passwords and encryption keys regularly can also cut down potential cyber fraud risks.
Users should also be aware of not using public wireless access points in libraries, cafes or airports to transfer sensitive data as hackers can access passwords, contacts and other sensitive information by cracking a Wi-Fi connection, the firm warned.
Michael Phillips, product director for BroadbandChoices.co.uk, said: "As long as you're using adequate security, it is safe to use a home wireless network to do online banking, check emails and use social networking sites such as Facebook."
"If a hacker was to crack into your wireless network they could potentially steal passwords for your online banking, copy your contacts from Outlook or even download illegal files using your stolen IP address."
Current Microsoft warnings state that home wireless internet connections (Wi-Fi) can be accessed by anyone within 300 feet of the router.
